New things in Awakening!

Awakening’s New Features for Students and Teachers!

Announcing teacher-friendly updates to Awakening. Based on teacher feedback our Legendary game developers and engineers have created ways for teachers to assign focus areas to students and a new Quizzler game!

During the school day (until 3 pm local time) students will play in Awakening School. Teachers have the option to assign a focus area (standard) for their students to experience during beastie battles. This focus area ensures that all questions during their beastie battles come from that standard. Focus areas can be different for each individual student. This is a great way to differentiate to meet the needs of all of your students. Teachers can view data on the percent of questions each student got correct during each beastie battle. Students must answer at least 70% of the questions correctly in a battle of at least five items in order to master an assigned focus area.

In the lobby of the school, students can play in the Quizzler Game Show where they can play alone or with other students. There are two types of rounds within the game:

  • Question Rounds where students answer a question. The question answered will be related to the grade level and the subject selected in their account.
  • Luck Rounds where students test their luck and select one of the letters. If the spinner doesn’t land on the chosen letter, then Quizzler gameplay continues. If the spinner lands on the letter selected, the student is dropped from the game show and eliminated! Playing in the Quizzler Game Show helps a student earn more Knowledge Points.

After hours and on the weekend, in addition to visiting the Awakening School, your students can ride the gondola to experience Awakening Town. This is where they can engage in other fun activities that are not found in the school all while continuing to work on the teacher-assigned Focus Area(s) during beastie battles.

Students Playing Legends of Learning Show Higher Test Scores!

In a recent study by West Ed, there is evidence that students who played Legends of Learning games at least twice per week had higher test scores compared to students who did not use the program.

The study included over 14,500 diverse students in fifth and eighth grade from a large school district in the Southeastern United States. As the number of games played grew, so did the achievement results of the students as shown in the graph below.

Students with high Legends of Learning usage of 50+ science games showed an increase of 23 percentile points equivalent to 0.6 of a standard deviation on their annual state science test. Additionally, students with moderate usage of 25-49 games had an increase of 13 percentile points equivalent to a 0.3 increase in standard deviation as compared to those who did not play the Legends of Learning games.

This study showed significant and educationally-meaningful differences in the mean science achievement of students with moderate and high usage.

Math Basecamp has three phases: (1) Foundations, (2) Mastery, and (3) Application. The foundations and applications phases consist of lesson plans and mini-games for conceptual development and application. The Mastery phase employs an individualized, adaptive instructional game.

Math Basecamp’s five-step mastery approach integrates research-proven techniques.

  • Individualizing instruction based on assessment of each learner’s fact mastery.
  • Activating prior knowledge developed during the fact fluency foundations phase.
  • Relying on the thoroughly-vetted cover-copy-compare method to study facts.
  • Solving new facts mixed with known facts and distractions to solidify facts in long-term memory.
  • Celebrating learner’s efforts and successes in accuracy and efficiency.

The entire mastery sequence is designed to employ gaming techniques to engage students and reduce math anxiety while efficiently instructing and practicing facts.

To earn Digital Promise’s certification, Legends of Learning had to do the following:

  • Consult rigorous and empirical research about learning to inform product design decisions;
  • Developed a theoretical framework, such as a logic model or theory of change, grounded in research about how people learn to drive product planning and decision-making;
  • Publish the product’s research basis in a form the public can easily access.
