Heat as Energy Transfer Science Games

7 games

In this series of games, your students will learn about the transfer of thermal energy. The Heat as Energy Transfer learning objective — based on NGSS and state standards — delivers improved student engagement and academic performance in your classroom, as demonstrated by research.

Concepts Covered

In science, “heat” is the transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another. Technically, “heat energy” doesn’t exist — it’s just thermal energy, the motion of atoms and molecules vibrating within a substance.

Temperature and thermal energy are not the same; thermal energy always moves from warmer substances (higher temperature) to colder ones.

During heat transfer, the particles in the warmer substance experience a decrease in kinetic energy, and those in the colder substance experience an increase. This can cause the substances to change their states of matter, or change their temperatures until they are equal.
