Understanding Functions Math Games
In this series of games, your students will learn that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. Numbers in a function table prior to the rule being applied are called the inputs. The operations that are applied to the input are called the rule. A function is a rule applied to inputs that yield exactly one output. Numbers in a function table after the rule is applied are called the outputs. There is exactly one output for every input.
A coordinate pair is an exact location on a Cartesian Grid. A coordinate pair is expressed as an (x, y) coordinate in which the x value determines the location of a point along the x-axis or horizontal axis and the y value determines the location of the point along the y-axis or vertical axis.
The input and output relationship in a function table can be expressed as a graph on a coordinate plane where (input, output) is equivalent to (x, y) where the input is the x value and the corresponding output is the y value. Determine whether a table is a function based upon the number of outputs for an input. Determine whether coordinate pairs plotted on a graph show a function based upon the number of outputs for each input.
