Properties of Matter Science Games

7 games

In this series of games, your students will learn that measurements of a variety of properties can be used to identify materials. Properties of Matter learning objective — based on NGSS and state standards — delivers improved student engagement and academic performance in your classroom, as demonstrated by research.

Concepts Covered

Properties of matter can be used to identify substances. Color is a physical property of matter. Hardness is a physical property of matter. Texture is a physical property of matter. Reflectivity is a property of matter related to the amount of light that a material reflects. Electrical conductivity is a physical property of matter related to how easily a material transmits electric current. Thermal conductivity is a physical property of matter related to how easily a material transmits heat.

All objects are made of one or more types of materials. The physical properties of a material remain the same even if the material is reduced in size. The mass of a substance is the amount of matter that it has. The volume of a substance is the amount of space that matter occupies. The temperature is a measure of how hot or cold something is. A material’s response to magnetic forces is a property of matter. Solubility is a physical property of matter related to how easily it dissolves in another material. Buoyancy is a physical property of matter related to a material’s ability to float or sink in water.

Scientists use scientific tools to measure the properties of matter. A measurement is an observation of a property of matter that is compared with a standard unit. A balance or scale measures the weight of an object. A thermometer measures temperature. Boiling point is a property of matter related to the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas. Freezing point is a property of matter related to the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid. Melting point is a property of matter related to the temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid.
